Stepping from the midnight ferry
To a land to me unknown
Not alone but with a lover
Helping laugh away our fears

Stepping from the midnight ferry
Stomach churning, no time for rest
Brought the heat of Spain inside me
Simmering the waters of Tangier

Lying motionless on the bed
The friendly, dirty city below
Happily back in the third world again
Sick and exhausted but somehow at home

Lying motionless on the bed
Drops of sweat roll down my chest
I become a feverish sauna
Waking only for news from beyond

On the streets, so much to see
Blacks from Africa look across at Spain
Risking all for the taunting shore
Some still living when they land

On the streets, so much to see
All familiar, nothing the same
Minds which wandered the far east of Islam
Now step across the other hand
